Increase harddisk buffer

Hi there,
i've seen that when transmission is running the harddisk makes a lot of accesses (the front led blinks a lot)...and i think that this could shorten my harddisk's life.
What about making a ram buffer to make less harddrive accesses and a burst sequential writing ??
Would this help to get a longer life to the harddisk ?
or this could be made directly with unix commands ? (hd/sdparm and so on? or inside the kernel too ? )
thanks a lot
