File associations and icon trouble

Post by drewski »

Hi there, long time reader, first time poster....

I recently decided to switch from using Azureus to Transmission full time and wanted to change the file association for .torrent files but I'm having all kinds of trouble namely:

1. When I try to change the default application to launch torrents, I get "It is not known if this application can open BitTorrent Metadata files."
Transmission doesn't appear on the list of Recommended Applications, I have to switch to All Applications for it to even appear. I find this odd.
.torrent files do now open by default with Transmission but the icon does not reflect that and I get asked each time if I want to launch a torrent because it has just been downloaded from the net.

2. I can change the document icon to the Transmission icon if I change the association of only one particular .torrent file via Get Info but when I hit Change All, all I get is a blank document icon. This doesn't occur if I choose one of the other torrent clients I have, only Transmission.

My gut feeling is that these problems are associated. I have tried recreating my Launch Services database, installing the latest nightly, repairing permissions, restarting several times, but nothing I do seems to deliver Transmission icons and a seamless opening of .torrent files. Any advice would be appreciated...I haven't found anything in this forum that has been able to help me out with this yet.

I'm using 10.5.7 on a 2.8GHz Intel iMac

That's strange, but I don't think it's caused by the app. Perhaps try restarting if you haven't already?

Hi, I've restarted many times. Interestingly Azureus and BitTorrent show up as Classic Applications in Get Info, does that have anything to do with it?

Still don't understand why Transmission doesn't get defined as a Recommended Application for torrents.

Did you remove Azureus completely?

And how exactly did you recreate your Launch Services Database? It sounds like there's a conflict in your computer. Might as well create a new user and seeing if the same symptoms appear in there.
