Transmission

So, i just got to a university in the uk (which I hear has been very unkind to bittorrent recently) and began setting up my computer, when I found that I had to use the university's VPN. I can use other programs such as browser's and podcast aggregator's, but have been unable to configure transmission to work, and believe that it is most likely because the university's tech team would rather I not. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get around them? I have seen many threads around the net on how vpn is the way to get around various censors, but no discussions on how to manipulate a vpn someone else set up. my only knowledge of computers just comes from me mucking about with trial and error.
