Transmission 1.92 won't start since last Mac OS X update

Post by pitulgi »

Hi all,

I don't know if this is related to the 10.6.3 update, but Transmission won't start anymore, unless I stop my Airport or ethernet connection.

The icon bounces for a long time and the main window won't show up. It does sometimes but is not responsive. If I start Transmission without any internet connection, it starts fine, but crawls if I turn it back up and add a torrent file. I tried the latest nightly, only to witness the same behavior. I also trashed the preferences without any luck.

Transmission 1.54 works fine though.

I couldn't find any crash report in Console or my logs, but I can provide whatever information you need to investigate this problem.

Thanks.

OK, some more information. Transmission does start after a couple of minutes actually, and then I can use it normally. I tried creating another account, but got the same behavior.

One last weird thing, Transmission bounces in the dock when I click on it, and then stays idle for the first couple of minutes. I can see it in my dock, but without a dot near its icon, saying it's actually started...

Well, if you need some more info, please tell me.

OK, here it is:

#3
Mac OS X 10.6.3 in French, with Transmission 1.92 and nightly 10444.
Both work fine if I wait for a couple of minutes for the program to start. Same behavior if I start them in English.

#6
Nothing in my Logs/CrashReporter, and all I can find in Console.app is this:

05/04/10 21:57:03 [0x0-0x3f13f1].org.m0k.transmission[3211] [21:57:03.818] Starting libevent thread

Thanks for your reply.

I am indeed using 1.92 stable. I already tried trashing every single preference file, even created another user account, but I got the same results. As for what Activity Monitor spits out, I'm pasting it below. I copied everything I got after Transmission started correctly (it took around 2-3 mn).

Thanks!

So nothing shows for Transmission in Activity Monitor during the 2-3 min. start-up process? In addition to the prefs files, remove, but not necessarily trash,Transmission's Application Support and Cache files when doing a clean install.
Well, I figured I'd just trash everything to make sure. I did remove the Application Support and Cache files too. Activity Monitor shows nothing except what I pasted above, Transmission is even shown as "Not responding" for the first 2 mn.
From re-reading your initial post, it seems you may have some kind of network/router issue. You may want to read through the last few pages of this thread to see if anything there might apply to your situation. If an older version works for you, why not use it?
Funny thing is, it worked fine with the same router, same connection, with ethernet or wifi, before I upgraded to 10.6.3. Maybe my ISP is playing tricks on me, it's always a possibility actually... I do know I should probably use an older version, but I kinda wanted to know what was happening, out of geeky curiosity :)
When posting lengthy items like crash reports or stacktraces, please try to use the pastebin mentioned in #6 above or at least a code block ().
Yep, sorry about that. I tried attaching the text file but it didn't work, and I forgot about the code tag. It's fixed now.
BTW, I just upgraded to 10.6.3 and T 1.92, a few days ago myself, all the way from 10.4.11 and T 1.34, and I must say I like that cat with the "Silent Roar". Both OS and Transmission are working with great alacrity. :)
Please don't tease :) I'll read the thread you mentioned before and try to figure something out. If anything changes, I'll be sure to post it here.

Thanks a lot for your support!

I noticed the same thing happen to me once I updated my Mac (Leopard). I noticed that when you brought up the Activity Monitor, Transmission was opening in 64-bit mode, so I selected Transmission in the Finder, then went to File --> Get Info and checked the "Open in 32 Bit Mode" and now it works perfectly fine. I dunno if that will help you any, though...

I forgot to say I tried that, but ended up with the same result... Thanks for the tip though.

Hey I've just joined the forums.

I have the same problem, Transmission taking about 2 minutes to load on the latest Mac OS X.

It just bounces in the dock for two minutes before loading.

Changing it to 32 bit doesn't make any difference.

OK, I tried that, and it seems that the DHT option is the culprit. Transmission starts and quits normally when I disable it!
