But then, all of a sudden every time I try to open the bittorent in transmission I get the same message that it is not a valid file. I have downloaded dozens of different files from different sites and get the same messages.

The same problem has been happening to me. I will download a torrent file and when I drag it into transmission the "create a torrent" window pops up, NOT the add torrent window.

When I go to file and choose the "open torrent file" and select the file, I get a message that says " 'blahblahblah ...
