error: "torrent can't be opened because it is a duplica

Post by yellowavcable »

Hello,

First off, I'm new to this whole torrent thing, so I apologize in advance if this is a stupid question. I've been trying to add torrents but I get the same message:

The torrent file cannot be opened because it is a duplicate of an already added transfer.

However, the file isn't showing up in transmission. I don't know what's wrong.

Leopard 10.5.3
Latest Version of Transmission (Downloaded it today)

Any help would be appreciated!

Do you have the filter bar active? On your main Transmisson window it is has the options All Active Downloading Seeding Paused.

If not push command-F and it should bring these options up. Click on all and that should list all the torrents you have added. Hopefully it is listed there and you can resume the transfer.

(hopefully it is this easy!!)

yellowavcable, actually I doubt there could be something wrong in Transmission. It simply compares the hash of the torrent you want to add with those already loaded in.

Are you sure that you didn't download that torrent before? Maybe it's a bit older and is paused? Or queued?

I am having precisely the same problem. It cannot possibly be what you said, Waldorf, because I only download Transmission today, and I have only downloaded three torrents. I downloaded them one after another - after the first downloaded, Transmission popped up some kind of window registering this fact and asking if I wanted to start it. I said yes, and when it finally finished, I went to open one of the other torrents, and I got this message:

This transfer already exists.

The torrent file cannot be opened because it is a duplicate of an already added transfer.

The only torrent file that I can find at all in Transmission is the one I already successfully downloaded. I've never added this new one before.

Earlier today I was trying a different bittorrent program and got a similar message (but the program was buggy in general and I dismissed it).

I am a complete knowlessman in this field and am utterly at a loss to figure out what's going on!

robinalaska: considering 2 different programs told you that it's a duplicate, it's probably a duplicate.

livings124, could you please then explain to me how this duplication occurs, and how to get Transmission to display and download my torrents? I deleted the .torrent files I'd been trying before and got entirely new ones, and when I tried to use them the same thing happened, right off the bat.

My transfers are adding themselves and hiding?

So you're saying Transmission has exactly 0 transfers, you add a torrent file, and it says it's a duplicate? Or it has 0, you add one, and then add a second one and it says it's a duplicate?

I have one transfer - the one that I have already successfully downloaded. When I try to add another one, a different one, it says it is a duplicate. This is the case no matter what the new torrent is or where it came from (I have tried torrents of two other materials, from several different locations). No transfers other than the one I already have will show in Transmission.

I'm going to try deleting that one (since it's completed anyway), rebooting, and having another go.

EDIT: Huzzah! This has instigated the ACTUAL adding of the transfers, and the (sloooowww) download process has begun. Now, does anyone know what went on in the first place?
yellowavcable, I'm sure that you have turned your computer on and off since you began this thread - was your incidence of the problem solved?

It doesn't matter if a torrent is completed or paused, as long as it is in Transmission it will be checked for duplicates when adding a new torrent. So the reboot did nothing to aid your 'problem'.

Could you try adding the first torrent again?

I would argue that it did aid my problem, as after I rebooted (and did nothing else) the problem was solved.
The other two torrents have completed and I've kept them in attempt to allow seeding (does this happen automatically or must I specifically tell a torrent to seed?); I deleted the first torrent a while ago, and when I try to download and add it again, it works. If I try a duplicate of the files I have, I get the duplicate warning. If I try a totally different torrent, it works. Sounds fine to me.

As am I! Now I only wish to know
a) what happened in the first place - just a glitch, I imagine, but maybe there could be a deeper understanding to be imparted by some tech-knowledgeable person;
b) if the OP yellowavcable was having the same apparently fixable problem.

Erraneous "duplicate!" alert

I had this very same behaviour yesterday and today.
I searched the whole Mac for any similar torrent or remains of it but didn't find anything.
So I guess it must be some kind of hash the application finds and thinks it's a sign of the same torrent.

On the other hand, after a re-boot, it works again.
Strange.
