whenever using Transmission the speed of our internet connection is getting a lot slower. I know, if I was downloading with 500 KB/s that wouldn´t be surprising. But even when I am only downloading with 20 KB/s using the internet is getting incredibly slow. Which is annoying my flatmates slightly Anyways.. we have a fairly fast DSL-line, I think with a bandwidth of 4000 or 8000 and are all using the line via a wireless router.
My download and upload speeds in Transmission are not limited so I am wondering if Transmission reserves a certain amount of bandwidth while its running even though it might not be needing all of it? Or is there another explanation? It just seems strange that download rates of 10 or 20 KB/s make the access even to simple websites soo slow and use of Skype or similar almost impossible..
In case there have been other posts on this problem, I apologise. I couldn´t find anything similar when using the search..
And what upload rate do you have? Too high upload can seriously slow your connection by blocking other packages to be sent.
You should set up rate limits in transmission and try if the problem still remains.
Upload rates are pretty much constantly at around 80 - 100 KB/s. But, when loading a webpage, aren´t the packages coming IN? How come that it becomes so much slower even though download rates are low? Can high uploads even block incoming information?
Still, what you are suggesting explains the problems we have with Skype.. cause there obviously a lot of information are going out as well and when the line is blocked by high uploads.. - yeah, no wonder it´s not working Thanks for that - I´ll try to limit the uploads.

Yes by loading a webpage you receive packages, but as http goes over tcp in which protocoll received packets must be acknowledged, it is necessary to keep enough upload bw free that ack packets can leave without delay (otherwise the server will slow it's rate of sending new packets or even resend some not-in-time-acknowledged packets).
Oh..ok. I get it.. yeah, that does make sense then. And now that I know that I finally found out why there is this funny little turtle-button in Transmission to limit speeds with just one click
Thanks a lot for your help, I (and my flatmates really appreciate it!
Based on what I've read, it's commonly recommended that you limit the upload bandwidth used by a bittorrent client to 70-80% of total available bandwidth. You can do that in Transmission via the Preferences pane. Then you can set a second, lower, upload limit using the Speed Limit function -- which can be helpful if you're also downloading something via your browser. I've noticed that in that instance giving the browser a bit more upload bandwidth can significantly affect download speed (e.g. from megaupload). That assumes, of course that you still have available download bandwidth...
In fact, I just checked the Transmission Help pane and found the following:
Make sure you cap your upload speed, so that it isn't flooded. A good rule of thumb is about 60-70% of your maximum upload bandwidth. This can be adjusted in Preferences >> Bandwidth, or in real time using the Action menu.
eg. If your upload connection is 256 Kilobits/sec, then you should cap it at 21 KB/sec ((256 / 8) * 0.66 = 21).
OK, I get these numbers, but I am still having this issue. A recent test showed that I getting 23,965 kbps download and 6051 kbps upload. So if I use your formula 6051/8*.66=499.207 I should set my upload speed below 500 and I will be fine.
My standard setting is 400 KB/s up and down. Speed limit setting is 100 KB/s up and down. When not in speed limit mode, every other internet operation is horrible, on all computers in the house! This is true even if Transmission is only actually sending/receiving at 50 KB up and down. As soon as I put on speed limit, everything is fine.
Now I just did a test, I set the standard speed to 400 down and 200 up. I set the speed limit mode to the same speed. Still, in standard mode, all other internet traffic is hindered, but in speed limit mode, everything else is fine. So it would appear that in standard mode, Transmission hogs more bandwidth than the setting, but only gets speeds of the setting, while in speed limit mode, it actually honors the restrictions.

Yeah, that IS weird.
I'm running 1.50b3 (which is r7776) which is running quite nicely in both standard and limited modes. I limit only my upload bandwidth in standard mode, leaving download bandwidth untouched. I also cap download speed in Speed Limit mode, although that hasn't often been a factor in my experience. Perhaps you should give the beta a spin?
Perhaps you could try removing the download limit in Standard mode just to see what happens?
I'd like to add that I'm seeing terrible download speeds using Transmission 1.5
I have a 24000/1024 line (downloads at 2.3Mb/s, and uploads at 100Kb/s)
As soon as I open transmission I'm limited to 300Kb/s download (approximately)
If I quit Transmission, my download speed jumps back up to 2.3Mb/s.
I'm using a local mirror from my internet provider (Internode) to test the speeds. (I start 2x2gb files downloading at 2.3Mb/s, start Transmission, watch my download speed go down to 300-400Kb/s, then quit Transmission and see my speeds go back to normal.)
I've set Transmission to only upload at 80Kb/s (and I've never had problems with this setting previously.)
New changes to my setup include a new router - Dynalink 1025w. (Though even with this new router, everything has been fine till Transmission 1.5.)
