Are port-forwarding and/or upnp necessary?

Post by swankster »

I get fine download speeds without any kind of port-forwarding behind my gateway and iptables. Do I need to do either of these things to get reasonable upload* speeds?

*changed a typo from "download"

You prolly have a UPNP enabled router and Transmission can use this feature to open a port in your router on its own when needed. If you are getting the green light in the network tab in the pref pane of Transmission, you are good to go.

My router doesn't support upnp :(

I don't want to leave a port wide open, so.. Do I have any other options?

Using GUFW, I can see it has the ability to add Transmission as a supported program, allowing inbound traffic through TBT's specified port. If it limits the inbound connections to TBT only, I'll be happy because I can port-forward knowing the port is only being used by TBT. I've asked a question to make sure on Launchpad, if this is indeed correct, and I'll post back with the answer.

Looks like I was wrong - UFW only opens the port universally. I suppose I don't have to port-forward, I just don't want it to affect my upload speed.
