[Solved] The Magic Slow Your Internet Button

Post by stickmus »

I found various topics on here that all seemed to be about this, with no solution on any of them. If you're experiencing crappy internet browsing while Transmission is open, try unchecking the "Enable peer exchange for public torrents" option in Peers preferences. This will not make your torrents go any faster, it's about your general internet connection outside of Transmission. I hope this helps someone else.

If anyone cares to investigate further, I'm on OSX 10.5.6 Build 9G55 on a PowerPC G4. I'm using Transmission 1.51 (7958). Let me know if you'd like any further information.

Yes, PEX is making your torrents go faster, yes I understand swarms and all the rest, but in some situations this appears to be at the expense of the internets for every other program on your machine. I did try and make that clear. Ah well. Hope this clears that up

You say if you turn PEX of the other programs work again, that doesn't mean it has to be that PEX is the problem, I would rather think something else is triggering the problem (like you didn't cap your upload limit, to many peers etc.) and that turning PEX of does also something to those things

Yes, well done, assume I am an idiot, and that I don't know what I'm talking about, that will get you far in life.

I have been using BT in various flavours for a number of years, and Transmission for a number of months, and I do understand about flooding connections, peer exchange, limiting connection, port forwarding etc. etc. etc.

However, in recent builds of Transmission there is some kind of bug that seems to affect some people some of the time, this bug means that whatever download/upload speed you have (even if it's not downloading anything), internet access outside of transmission slows to a crawl. I found out, as much through trial and error as anything, that turning of PEX stops this from happening. In an attempt to help others with the same information I (signed up and) posted the information up here for other people to access.

Thanks for making me feel welcome, and that my time was well spent.

well how am I supposed to know how much you know? I can't smell it... You don't know how many people come here asking questions that were questioned many times before, I am here already more then half a year and I am answering the same questions every day... And while my first reply wasn't that nice (I am sorry for that) in my second I was being nice...
