Interest in iPhone app to wrap WebUI?

Post by dancavallaro »

Hi all,

I read through some of the threads regarding the web interface, and specifically, the iPhone web interface. I've seen that there are some bookmarklets for adding new torrents, and with the 3.0 update coming this summer, you'll also have the option of copy and pasting torrent links into the web UI. But would there be any interest in an iPhone app that is basically a wrapper for the web UI, with the added functionality of being able to browse to a torrent site, click a .torrent link, and have it start automatically? Here are my preliminary thoughts on it:
  • An app independent of MobileSafari will allow you to do away with the Safari toolbars at the top and bottom which take up valuable screen real estate. As I see it, the only toolbar the app would need is a single button allowing you to add a new torrent.
  • If you want to add a new torrent, it opens up a new web view, where you can browse to the torrent site of your choice, and click on a .torrent link.
  • After being prompted, if you confirm the download, it will then add the .torrent to your download list, and return you to the web UI. Other than the "adding a torrent" screen, this will be exactly the same as the webUI.
Does that sound worthwhile, or is everyone satisfied with the current bookmarklet solution and the coming copy and paste?

the current bookmarklets don't work on private sites...... I would love an iphone app. someone here has already written an app, and is waiting for it to be approved by apple.

Hmm, thanks for pointing that out, I hadn't seen that. Very strange that it hasn't been approved though, it's been almost 3 months! It does not take that long to approve apps anymore unless there's a problem with the app, generally. The way I envision my app is fairly simple, and should only take a couple days to develop, so maybe I'll submit it and see if I have any trouble getting it on the store.
