Transmission hogging connection despite slow torrents
Transmission hogging connection despite slow torrents
I'm having a where Transmission after a while begins to seriously hog my bandwidth, even though the torrents themselves are downloading very slowly. I've limited global peer count to 40 and it's not helped any, also set a limit of 150kb/sec (half my connection) download, and 20kb/sec (less than half) upload.
I recently made the switch from Tomato Torrent which had no troubles, but Transmission, almost without fail around 6pm BST just slows to a crawl and I have to close it if I want to use the internet again. Sometimes a few hours later I can turn it back on and it'll be fine. It's happened around the same time for the last five or six days I've been using it, closing Transmission clears the problem right up after a little while.
It wouldn't seem to be my ISP as Tomato Torrent was unaffected, I've also explicitly opened the incoming peers port so that it reports it as open (though my router should support UPnP just fine).
Is there anything else I can check? My router seems okay as it's only getting an occasional log message saying something about spoofing.
I'd really hate to have to switch back to Tomato torrent as I really like Transmission, but it never had any such problem and would happily handle large numbers of peers.

check your upload speed when it slows your internet down

Re: Transmission hogging connection despite slow torrents
My upstream is 256kbps, so about 32kb/sec. I've tried limiting upload to 20kb/sec and 10kb/sec with no luck unfortunately =(
Re: Transmission hogging connection despite slow torrents
try to put it at 0? what does happen then? if it isn't that then i don't know what is the case
Re: Transmission hogging connection despite slow torrents
As I speak I have Transmission open and it's maxed out its 20kb/sec upload limit, yet my internet is unaffected. Downloading in Transmission is a bit slow but that seems to be because I've no decent peers yet.
It's a very bewildering problem. It could I suppose still be upload speed if at the times I usually have trouble my ISP is over-subscribed on upstream bandwidth, if this is the case then if it happens again today I will try disabling upload completely as you suggest.

For people experiencing this you might find this helps:

Re: Transmission hogging connection despite slow torrents
Unfortunately that doesn't work for me, it's just as bad with PEX on or off, when it slows down I mean.
Re: Transmission hogging connection despite slow torrents
I've currently got three torrents in my list, one or all of which (I've been unable to determine as I don't want to stop any of them) is causing Transmission to grind to a halt and hog my connection after only a couple of hours, which is much faster than it normally has. Any developers want to take a look at these?

maybe you have to give more info, we and the developers can't guess thingsHaravikk wrote:I've currently got three torrents in my list, one or all of which (I've been unable to determine as I don't want to stop any of them) is causing Transmission to grind to a halt and hog my connection after only a couple of hours, which is much faster than it normally has. Re: Transmission hogging connection despite slow torrents
I wanted to bump this as I've been having exactly this kind of problem. I mean I get this off and on now and then but lately it's been happening a lot more often, so I'm not sure if any of the recent beta releases has made it worse, or if it's related to a torrent I've started lately or not, I'm afraid I'm quite a heavy torrent user and while I've tried my best to figure out if a particular torrent is at fault I've not had much luck, it seems to mostly be a case of hoping quitting Transmission and trying again later and hoping for the best.
I'm wondering if there's any good way to track how many actual connections Transmission has open? I know there's a global connections setting, but do DHT and other tracker-related connections fall within that limit? Are there any particular errors I should look out for? Is there any way to find out how much bandwidth is being used by Transmission, even if just a rough estimate? I'm fairly technically savvy but I'm not all that great with network related stuff, so anyone that knows some terminal commands that might help give more information, please feel free to post!
Thanks for any help, I'll keep at the trial and error approach to see if I can find any more useful information! Oh, I do notice that this affects my whole home network and not just my local machine, so I'm thinking maybe it's an issue traffic to my router perhaps? I've got a fairly high-end wireless router though (D-Link DIR-655) so I would like to think that it can handle a lot of connections, unfortunately I can't really take it out of the equation to find out though as I don't have any long enough cables to connect my main computer which is why I'm using wireless to begin with, and my other machines aren't really suitable for duplicating my Transmission set-up on.

Re: Transmission hogging connection despite slow torrents
This is a repost of an earlier one viewtopic.php?f=4&t=11486&p=59456#p59456...It has the answer (at least it worked for me):
1) disabled Micro Transport Protocol (no idea what this does but hey)
2) Reduced my download to 1000 KBs (my speed was rated at 5.45mb/s)
3) Reduce my upload to 30 Kbs (rated speed was higher but I can't remember what it was)
4) Set speed limit modes for heavy traffic times (shared internet)
5) Max of 10 active transfers
6) No PEX, no DHT, no local peer discovery, global max =90 peers, and max connections =50 peers, and prefer encrypted peers (in Preferences/Peers)
7) Kept all torrents under the same global scheme.
8) Once setting these things I unplugged the modem and router, readjusted the furniture, then plugged it back in again (took about 5 mins total).
9) internet was down for 10 minutes but then was back up and I can surf and download at the same time.
Result? All my torrents are now downloading not favouring one torrent and ignoring another and everyone else can now use the internet. A big thank you to x190, beerski, Jordan, and John_ (via Sodomy).
PS. I use Transmission 2.42 (13013) on Mac OS 10.6.8
