Transmission can't open torrents

I am running OS 10.5.6 on a MacBook Pro with Transmission 1.61.

Everything was working just fine until my update alert told me there was a new version of Transmission available, so I upgraded (to 1.61) and now Transmission seems to be working fine, except that I cannot open a torrent file from within the program. If I click on the little folder button on the toolbar or choose "Open Torrent File..." from the File menu the Open dialog box pops up like always, but all torrent files (all other files, too, actually) are grayed out and un-selectable. The only files that are not grayed out are folders, but selecting or double-clicking them only opens the folder (obviously), where inside all the torrent files are still grayed out and impossible to select. I have tried selecting a torrent file in the Finder and opening the "Get Info" window, thinking that maybe if I change the "Open With" option to the latest version of Transmission it might fix the problem, but Transmission is not even listed among the options. If I right-click a torrent file in the Finder and choose "Open With", Transmission is not listed among the options their, either, and even when I choose "Other" and navigate to the Transmission app to select it manually it is grayed out and impossible to choose.

I can open torrents by dragging and dropping them onto the open Transmission window or the application icon on the dock. That's the only way I can do it right now, but it does seem to work fine.

I have tried erasing Transmission and re-downloading and installing it from the website. No go. I even tried erasing it again, this time also erasing all of the support files (Application Support, Preferences, etc.) and then re-downloading and installing it. Still no go.

No matter what I do I can't seem to get Transmission to open torrent files or get the Finder to recognize that torrent files are meant to be opened by Transmission.

Please help! Anyone who has any ideas or advise, it would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know how to solve the problem but there is an much easier way to open torrents, dubble click them to open them. (if they want to open in an other program right click on one torrent and say "show info" then go to "open with" and select transmission, also clikc on the button under it to make all .torrent files act that way

Yes, I know that. But thank you for the tip, anyway.

As I mentioned above, I can use various roundabout methods to get a torrent open and downloading, but the point is really to get Transmission back to working properly.

Help, anyone?
