Queue settings not working

I'm using Transmission 1.75 on my 15" MacBook Pro running OS 10.5

Regardless of what numbers I put in the Queues section of Transmission's settings, nothing changes. I put "download with a maximum of 5 active transfers", it will download with however many it can. Really quite annoying, as when I'm downloading directly to an external, and it tries to write 20 files at once, I actually lose speed, not gain it.

Any ideas?

Is anyone else having this issue? If someone can please confirm whether this is happening on their system, it would be much appreciated.
