only 1 or 2 peers detected

Post by gdrori »

hello, I try to use Transmission on Mac OS X 10.6.1 (latest version) but transmission only gives me 1 or 2 peers for a torrent(mostly 0 peers) port is open and all this stuff. Torrents work on uTorrent and Vuze(Azureus) but i prefer Transmission.

any help will be very appreciated,
gdrori

P.S. i got the same problem on another computer with 10.5.8.

I fixed it by disabling the prefer encrypted peers option... thanks anyway..

I have the same problem and I have already tried turning off 'prefer encrypted'. I have also enabled both Use Peer Exchange and Use distributed hash table (in the belief using both would maximise the number of peers listed).

There is clear evidence Transmission (1.7.6 in my case) is not seeing all the active peers. To illustrate, one recent torrent I was connected to only listed at the time myself and one other peer over more than an hour. The other peer was showing the percent it had going up quite rapidly while at the same time I was not uploading to that other peer. In other words it must have been getting a feed from some other peer Transmission did not list. This was not a unique case.

The above specific case also showed another symptom which seemed to suggest Transmission was not properly seeing the rest. The number of downloads switched more than once between something like 5, and 38. This suggests that at different times it was connected to different groups and seeing different totals.

Note: I am aware that once I have received 100% of a torrent and begin seeding, I will no longer see other seeders (which I regard as a bad design feature), the above cases were well before that point.

osiris: Transmission connects to all the peers it can (within the peer limit). If a tracker doesn't give us peer info, it fails at connecting, they reject us, or 100 other different reasons, then the peer won't be connected to. It is not reasonable to assume you will connect to everyone.

And what benefit would there be in two seeders connecting, and staying connected, to each other? How is dropping other seeders when seeding bad design?

I could understand other peers not feeding me as they may not have the blocks I need or have enough bandwidth or available connections, but I would still have expected them to be listed. I could also understand occasional instances a tracker did not respond, but this was over an extended period and it was obvious a peer I was connected to could see those other peers.

If I can see how many other seeders are online (once I am a seeder) I can judge how long I need to keep seeding.

So you expect Transmission to display all peers, even though there is no way to actually get the peer info? And Transmission tells you how many total seeders there are on the tracker - there's no need to remain connected to them.
