Consistent Downloads? (New Airport Extreme)

I looked around and did not find a topic on this because i'm not really sure where my problem lies. But here's my topic
Yesterday my roomate had replaced our Linksys router with an Aiport Extreme. Transmission worked fine with the Linksys router. no problems with ports or anything. Pretty smooth. Since yesterday, I have tried downloading several healthy torrents today and all have ended up with this result: each torrent begins out searching for peers.for example i had one between 100 and 110 peers. It would jump up and down from 0-30 kb download to flatline zero KB downloading. It read' "downloading from 0 of 103 peers", yet it was still uploading at nearly 200 kb. and would occasionally download from 1 or 2 peers for mere seconds then back to zero. i guess my question is why is the downloading so inconsistent if so many peers are available.

I have a feeling there is some sort of setting I am unaware of or something because my knowledge of torrenting is rather slim. Could it be firewall related? Port related? Any help/clarification would be appreciated.
