Maybe I don't understand how torrents work...

Post by geekamo »

Hello Everyone!

This is my first time posting here, and I'm fairly new to the torrent world.

One thing I have noticed, is that my upload - is always higher then my download speed. And I know from using uTorrent (on the PC side) that wasn't the case.

If I have my speed settings for download & upload set to Unlimited - why is my download speed never exceeding my upload speed?

Also, what exactly is "Ratio"? My ratio is "2.22". I don't really even know what that means, but I think it has to do with download & upload speeds.

Another thing, if I set my download speed to unlimited and I limit my upload speed to something low - not only does the upload speed lower, but also my download speed takes a huge hit in speed as well.

Can someone kinda give me a "Torrent 101" course and tell me what I'm missing?

Thank you in advance!

Upoad vs download speeds: Usually, this depends on the quality of the swarm. If it's young and has a lot of leechers compared to seeders, most people will be downloading than uploading. It's not a good idea to let your upload roam free. It can congest the router or the modem, and slow down everything on the network.

Ratio: Ratio is the amount of data uploaded divided by the amount downloaded. It can be used in determining when to have Transmission stop sharing a torrent. A ratio of >1.00 is recommended on any torrents to keep the content alive.

Limited upload and slower download: How low have you set upload? Most BitTorrent clients implement a tit-for-tat method when giving data. If you're not sharing to them, they'll cut you off.
