Change of download location and version update

Post by ngllgn »

I have recently bought a new Intel Mac and this has entailed two changes

1 reorganising files on the computer, which has probably resulted in changing both the download destination of a file being downloaded and the path to the file to be shared. Do these changes of locations mean that a download may not complete or might complete to the wrong place?

2 updating today to version 2.2.2

Before changes 1 and 2 above, the earlier version of Transmission was working perfectly.

I can see that something is not right for the following reasons:

a) In the main Transmission window, all the completed transfers have a yellow triangle warning against them on the left and 'Paused' against them on the right. The only two transfers that do not have the yellow triangle and 'Paused' against them are uncompleted downloads.

b) No information at all is shown for the completed transfers in the main Transmission window; download speed, upload speed and ratio were all previously shown.

c) The colours in the main Transmission window have changed. All the bars are now grey. The bars used to be blue for active downloads or to show the extent of a partial download ,and green for a completed download.

d) Clicking on either the 'Resume' or 'Filter' icons on the paused and completed downloads does nothing.

e) Clicking on the 'Remove' icon does remove a completed transfer.

f) Under Transmission/Preferences/Network 'Network: Peer listing port 49271' has a red light against it and the port is listed as closed. This was green and open before and I have done nothing at all other than make the two changes above top.

g) One of the incomplete transfers does start to download from time to time, with the estimated remaining time for the download shown, and a partial blue bar for the extent of the partial download, but no information on download or upload speed (or ratio).

There may be one more clue as to what might be wrong. Another torrent client (aMule, and I apologise for mentioning the competition) is also failing to connect.

With regard to f) above, and apart from having changed nothing on the computer network and router firewall settings, under System Preferences/Security/Firewall/Advanced Transmission is shown with a green light and 'Allow incoming connections'

I would be grateful for, if possible, simple step-by-step instructions to help restore Transmission to its former glorious working order. Many thanks in advance.

The yellow triangle problem is largely solved thanks to your tip.

I have been fiddling around with the port problem since your post, and think part of the trouble is that I do not understand all the jargon and the process, even after reading all the help pages.
The router configuration options include a NAT page, but this doesn't show me whether NAT is turned on or off. It does though offer the ability to add customised applications such as Transmission and there are various boxes that have to be filled out. With the details I have filled in, these are:

Application: Transmission
Protocol: TCP/UDP
Source port start: 49271
Source port end: 49271
Destination IP : 192.xxx.xx.xxx
Destination port start: 49271
Destination port end: 49271

My questions in relation to this are whether the
protocol should be TCP or UDP or TCP/UDP ie both
whether the source port start/end refers to the port being opened in the router's firewall
whether the destination port start/end refers to the port being opened in the computer's firewall
whether the destination IP refers to the router's internal or external IP, or the computer's IP ie what should I put here?

For the moment I have put the computer's IP, which is shown on the router's LAN page. Is this correct? I have my doubts as when I click on OK ie I wish to save these port forwarding parameters, the router message gives a server busy error and a pinwheel then spins for ever saying 'Processing...please wait'.

I understand that 51413 may be the default peer listening port, although I have set it as 49271 as above. Does this matter, or should I have at least two ports open for Transmission ie one for peer listening, preferably the default port, and then another for TCP or UDP or both?

I have reserved an IP for the computer so that it does not change every time depending on how many devices (usually 4 or 5) are connected to my home network.

Notwithstanding all the above, Transmission seems to work, if rather slowly, with the peer listening port closed. But I would still like to improve my knowledge and understand the process better. Thank you in advance for more tips.

OK, so I managed to get the 49271 peer listening port to go green! As a consequence of doing that, I now seem to be unable to upload or download! :(

I think the critical combination was
1) setting the Mac's System Preferences/Security/Firewall/Advanced to allow incoming connections
2) setting the port number in the router settings and making sure that the port forwarding was being done to my computer with its reserved IP (as set in router configurations)
3) making sure that NAT and UPnP were NOT ticked in either the router settings or Transmission preferences

Deleting an earlier version of Transmission, and deleting Transmission in System Preferences and in the router configuration BEFORE undertaking steps 1) 2) and 3) above may have helped, or not.

Please note I am using an Intel Mac with 10.6.6, a Vodafone HG556a and Transmission 2.2.6

Whatever I did opening the Transmission Peer Listening Port successfully so that the Peer Listening Port appears with a green light next to it in Transmission Preferences has been a disaster. Now I cannot download or upload anything at all with Transmission. Any theories?

Well, I'm not really quite sure what's going on, but after removing all my active downloads from Transmission, then adding them back in and verifying local data, I've got everything going again. :D The only curiosity now is that all my ratios have gone to zero. :o
