LAN Speed

Post by dandruff »

I know that this feature had been asked for, but the relevant threads are now closed, so, I create a new one!

LAN speed should be ajustable independent from Internet speed. I use torrents to share big files over my home network (35-50 gig movie files), fast, reliable and error correcting. Why should I open my Internet Connection to full blast only to transfer over my LAN?

I am sure that other people use torrent over LAN for other reasons but are there any reasons to refuse to implement this feature?

It may be too complicated to write, to hard to monitor or any other reason that is valid, but tagging it as "bloat" is a non-sense. If you allow LPD to be a different feature from Internet sharing (thus having to tick the box to activate it) then LP Speed should be a corollary to this. To be logical, if you do not allow LP Speed adjustment, then LPD should be always on...

If you truly think that LPD is a different feature from the "normal" use of TBT, then LP Speed should be created to allow tweaking of this LPD feature.

I suggest a simple tick-box with "Allow Unlimited LAN speed" in the Bandwidth sub-menu of TBT Preferences. Simple and elegant, not at all a bloat.

The only other post I found about this topic is this post from Aug 17, 2009. Is that what you're referring to? What were the other relevant threads?

Yes, many.
  • I don't see any sign that very many users want this or would use this.
  • Every new feature requires more code to be written, tested, debugged, and, most importantly, maintained.
  • Adding a new feature (usually) requires a long-term commitment, since removing features can make users angry.
  • Transmission is intended to be a powerful but simple torrent client. It doesn't have to have every bell and whistle.
  • None of the developers have infinite time to add every feature that is requested.
  • And, bloat. Any feature that will not be used by many people is bloat in a KISS application. With all respect, whether or not you want it is not the question :)
The question isn't, "are there any reasons to refuse to implement this feature?"

The question is, "are there good reasons to implement this feature? If it is implemented, will anyone use it?"

I was just thinking about this today. I used trans to download a big patch for an online game. But the game is on my windows computer. My plan was to let the linux computer get the file and then use utorrent to copy it over. Utorrent as a setting that bypasses speed limiting for lan connections. I did this once before sending from the windows computer to the linux computer when trying another torrent program on the linux comp. It worked well and very fast. But when I tried to go the other way today with the linux computer using trans, the upload to utorrent was capped at 100kb. Even when I went in using the remote gui and setting the upload for that file to 1000k, it remained a rock steady 100kb. At the same time, Utorrent was finding people on the internet that where sending at 200k+. So I was getting stuff twice as fast from the internet then from a couple feet away on my lan.

It should be a simple thing. Just check the ip of the client and if it's a lan ip (for example 192.168.xxx.xxx), ignore bandwidth caps.

Funny Just came across this issue we realized although many of us are on the same LAN we actually have access to multiple outside lines of varying speeds and while we love transmission it lack of unlimited speed on LAN means we are often connected to each other through the outside lines and ups the bandwidth usage for our organization unnecessarily this would be a very good feature to implement

I also support this! I have three computers with three different operating systems on them, but still needs access to more or less the same mediafiles, and the features that sharing these files with the other computers via torrent provides would make this an ideal addition!
