don't understand speed limits / schedule

Post by qnapts209user »

Hi. I have transmission 2.20b1 on a qnap ts209, with the transmission remote 3.24 client on my pc.
I want it to download or upload ONLY between midnight and 7am, and for download and upload to be disabled at other times. It MUST NOT upload or download at other times.

Here are the settings (the web client has a better view than the remote client)

I can't get it to stop uploading or downloading EVER. I've tried puting "1" in the upload and download rate which slows it, but doesn't stop it...

The "time constraint" setting appears to be unfunctional. It just scoots along all the time. I'm no linux guru. I installed this using a qnap package manager in its admin console, and most of it just worked (watch folders do not work at all, and permissions are still iffy when I download something that creates sub-folders, but I've tried and failed to fix those and gave up). Maybe the time thing is yet another borked bit.

Can anyone suggest what I have done wrong? I'm sure I'll facepalm when someone says "Oh it will just be setting X" :)

AFAIK you can't stop it completely from downloading or uploading. You would have to write a scheduled script to launch and quit Transmission so it only runs during you preferred time. I use a calendar (iCal) linked to an AppleScript for this purpose. I'm not aware of how to do this under Linux.

I've fiddled some more and agree that it doesn't seem to be able to do it completely. I have set up the speed limits so that the speed limit is at 1kbps in NORMAL times, and faster in "turtle" mode, which seems to be reasonable.

I have also tried setting up packet and port filtering in my router but it doesn't work that well - perhaps something to do with protocol encryption? I don't know, but even with the port blocked it stills seems to be capable of uploading. I don't know enough on how it all works to come up with a complete solution, so i'm just plugging away trying things

Im assuming the problem lies in that setting it to 0 means setting it "unlimited". At least that is what it does in many other clients, such as uTorrent. I too suggest you try set up some kind of script turning on and off the daemon.

What router do you use? I suggest you install third-party firmware such as DD-WRT or Tomato. Go to their sites and check if you are supported, can make your router work much more efficiently.

transmission 2.22 running on Qnap TS109
transmission remote dotnet 3.24

Remote Settings->Alternate Speed Limit
Enable alternate speed limit
Down: 0 KB/s
Up: 0 KB/s
Time constraint
6:58 to 0:2

All uploads and downloads are disabled from 6:58am to 12:02am - at least that's my observation for the past couple of months.

transmission 2.22 (12099) running on Qnap TS109
web interface
Settings->Preferences->Speed-Temporary Speed Limits (Turtle)
Download Rate: 0 KB/s
Upload Rate: 0 KB/s
Scheduled Time: 6:45 to 0:15
On Days: Everyday

All uploads and downloads are disabled from 6:45am to 12:15am

As such 0 KB/s appears to be really zero KB/s and not unlimited as we've variably experienced with with other "torrenting" apps.

My broadband plan's peak period 7am-12midnight - so I torrent is off since it's less data allowance during peak - so I "turtle" transmission during this period. Between 12midnight and 7am turtle is off and I leave all the download/upload rates un-checked and and they'll mostly run as fast it can.
