Restart Torrent Without Re-downloading?
Restart Torrent Without Re-downloading?
I recently downloaded a 50 GB torrent and I removed the torrent from the list of torrents. I still wanted to seed and all but now when I re-add the torrent, It starts downloading the torrent all over again even thought all the data is there. How can I go about fixing this? Any help would be appreciated!

Re: Restart Torrent Without Re-downloading?
Thank you so much! I've been wondering how to do that myself! I always try to be a good seeder, but I restarted Transmission without my external hard drive plugged in and ran into the same problem!
Re: Restart Torrent Without Re-downloading?
I'd like to restart seeding too but can't using these instructions.
I moved the torrent and the download back to the default download location, but when I try to verify, T 2.4.2 refuses -- it shows the download (which is a folder) as being empty. It isn't -- I checked and everything's there.

Re: Restart Torrent Without Re-downloading?
I have the "Default location" set to "Same as torrent file," and "Keep incomplete files in" set to "Desktop." The torrent file and folder are on the Desktop and the folder is intact with its original name, etc.
When I double-click the torrent file, it shows an empty folder and therefore can't verify.

Re: Restart Torrent Without Re-downloading?
I deleted the torrent file and (empty) folder from the locations you specified -- even relaunched T -- but get the same behavior.
As soon as I double-click the torrent file (which is on my Desktop, along with the intact folder) T puts a fresh copy in ~/Library/Application Support/Transmission/Torrents, creates a new empty folder in Resume, and the verify operation shows an empty folder.
PS - Thanks for the extremely clear graphics. That was a lot of work!

Ands that's it. The first unresolved attempt to verify was automatic. The second appeared after I clicked "Verify Local Data."2011-12-31 06:31:25 +0000 bencode.c:1721 [Info] Transmission: Saved "/~Library/Application Support/Transmission/Torrents/xxx.torrent"

Re: Restart Torrent Without Re-downloading?
Sorry -- I missed your instruction to select Debug. I cleared T's Resume and Torrents folders, cleared the Log window, and made a fresh attempt:

Re: Restart Torrent Without Re-downloading?
It's definitely the same .torrent, and I'm at a loss to think of what change I might have made to the download itself. But you must be right. If it happens again with a different torrent, I'll report back.Perhaps the data has been changed in some way since it was d/led or you may be trying to use a different .torrent than the original. In that case, you would need to re-download the torrent data.
My ratio on this one was slightly better than 5 so I guess I needn't feel bad. It's just that I have bandwidth to spare and the torrent was active when I saw it last, so I wanted to continue seeding. I know what it's like to be short on seeders.
Thanks again for your patient and lucid help.
Re: Restart Torrent Without Re-downloading?
I tried 2 things:
1. Double-clicked the .torrent (which leaves T's transfer window blank) and tried "File->Move Data File To..."
2. Clicked "Add," paused T, and tried "File" etc.
In both cases, that option was grayed out. Perhaps this is diagnostic?
I also downloaded the .torrent again to be certain it's correct -- no help.

Re: Restart Torrent Without Re-downloading?
Oops! No. I was so intent on following your directions, I wasn't thinking.Did you select the torrent in Transmission's Main Window first?
Before seeing your update, I did a clean install per your instructions and rebooted for good measure.
Once I Add the .torrent, the window you show vanishes on my system. After pausing and selecting the torrent, I was able to select "Move" etc. and I pointed T to the folder containing the data and .torrent. Then, I selected "Verify" from the Transfers menu. T paused the download, did a quick scan (without displaying the window you posted), and remained paused, still showing "0 of 4 GB" for the data.
Re: Restart Torrent Without Re-downloading?
Yes, I believe your instructions were clear. Here's a prototype I created to illustrate what I did:Example folder structure:
Desktop->"untitled"->"Torrent X (folder)->Files(avis, mp3s, jpgs, etc.)
The real data folder is not empty, of course -- it contains the full download.
Yes, I pointed the Move at the target folder on the Desktop and selected Verify from the Transfers menu. I presume it doesn't actually matter what that folder is named. You need to select "untitled" for "Move". Then do a "Verify".
Re: Restart Torrent Without Re-downloading?
Please look at the image again. Notice that the Data folder's arrowhead is in the closed position, its size is zero, and the .torrent is not indented. The .torrent is not inside the Data folder (which would be an obvious mistake) -- they're both in the "T target folder."I still think you are doing it wrong (because you have the .torrent inside "Data folder")
without knowing what you now have set in your Preferences, I'm unsure about how to advise you further.
T's Preferences are in their default states. After re-installing it, I thought it best to leave them as-is to avoid complicating the debugging.
I got the impression that you curious about this problem and wanted to explore it further, but if your patience or ideas are exhausted, I'm content to do that.Or, just move on to new torrents.
I'll look for a small torrent for test purposes and see if this problem replicates.
Re: Restart Torrent Without Re-downloading?
Understood. When selecting a data location, you always need to select the folder one level above whatever file or top level folder that was created by Transmission for the torrent.
That must be the case. I tested with another torrent and found that T and OSX are working properly and I've been doing things correctly. If your data will not verify after you have done that correctly, then it must have been altered or corrupted since download or you may be using the wrong .torrent.
Thanks again for your help.
