Transmission issues with the /Volumes Directory

Post by napierzaza »

I find that if you have your incomplete or download folder on a mounted external hard drive you can get issues if you open Transmission when the drive is not mounted.

The issue is that Transmission actually makes a folder in the name of the mounted volume in /Volumes and then gives up in finding the files since the folder is empty. This is a problem because the folder in the /Volumes directory stays there forever and actually prevents the mounted hard drive from being mounted under that name once it actually is mounted. Once mounted the drive still appears as "Hard Disk" on the desktop. But if you check in the /Volumes folder it is renamed by the system to something else to prevent conflicts with Transmissions folder thus preventing Transmission from finding it at all. This means that you have to actually open Volumes (cli is how I do it) and delete the folder Transmission created, remount the drive and re-open Transmission.

So I suggest that Transmission not do this if the directory is under /Volumes, and maybe not at all but I don't know.

Well it happens if my computer reboots somehow and the drive doesn't come up since Transmission starts automatically on boot-up. But ultimately it should be forbidden to make a directory inside the /Volumes directory since that is for mounted drives.
