Does upnp auto close ports?

Post by ithrowpicks »

I am using Transmission 2.04 on my DLink DNS-323 NAS device.
I was wondering if I change the port-forwarding-enabled option to "True" (it's set to false now) will Transmission auto close the port if no traffic is detected?

The reason I am asking is because I don't torrent that often and I would prefer to keep the port closed since it is not in use 95% of the time.

Hi ithrowpicks,

I'll have a go at this one. We I can't answer definitively but you could test yourself to see if this happens or not. Open Transmission prefs to confirm what port it is using. Use a site such as http://grc.com (shields up page) to check if indeed that port is open. Hit 'randomise' and then go to grc.com and test that same port again.

Cheers,

I recently switched to Transmission from uTorrent (on Wine) on Ubuntu. My router is up to 10 active open ports identified with the description "Transmission at xxxx" where xxxx is the port number. It was after noting this that I googled and found this thread.

sisyphist: I think you're in the wrong thread. What is your problem exactly?
---

The original post in this thread was from September, so I don't know if it's still relevant to the user. As far as I know, Transmission does not close the port. UPnP actively checks and maintains an open port every several minutes (I forgot the exact number).

Sorry, I thought it matched up. The original poster's question seemed to ask whether the port would be automatically closed. I think my problem relates to that, but I'm not very familiar with how uPnP works.

Since I started using Transmission, none of the ports opened by Transmission on my router are closed. My router allows me 20 entries for port forwarding; Transmission rapidly fills these up. I have Transmission set to use random ports, and encrypt traffic. I have to periodically, manually clear the ports on my router.

If you feel the thread is stale or I've misplaced my question, I'd be happy to create a new post.

Thanks for your response.
