1.93 settings.json keeps rewriting and can't access webui

I've been trying at the problem for hours now. Please help!

I keep trying to modify settings.json but it keeps getting rewritten to the previous settings, and every time I try to access the webui, I'm asked for authentication, and the password in settings.json won't work! It shouldn't be asking for authentication in the first place considering...

"rpc-authentication-required": false,

I'm new to linux and my torrents are important to me, so someone please tell me WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON!!!

I forgot to mention I'm running on the Gtk configuration settings in accordance with the recommendations from https://trac.transmissionbt.com/wiki/ConfigFiles.

you have to close down Transmission before editing settings.json otherwise the changes won't stick.
