I recently bought a mac and would like to give Transmission a try. I currently have 1600+ torrents seeding in uTorrent on my Windows machine that I wish to transfer to Transmission. Is there a utility to do this? And if not, how could I tell transmission where my files are? I am obviosly looking for a method that doesnt require me to manually set the path of every .torrent.
Thank you.

Re: Transfer seeding torrents from uTorrent to Transmission
I would put all the files you downloaded with uTorrent into the same directory. Then use Transmission preferences to set your default download directory and point that to the directory where you put all you uTorrent downloads. You also want to set Transmission to not open a window for new torrents (it's in preferences/transfers/adding).
Once you've done that, go back to uTorrent and export a .torrent file for every torrent you downloaded (if you kept the original torrent files, you can skips this). Now open all these torrents with Transmission. If everything goes right, it should recognize that you already downloaded the files (because they are in your default download directory). It will check each file for consistency, which will probably take some time. Once it's finished, it should start seeding.

Re: Transfer seeding torrents from uTorrent to Transmission
Will transmission automatically check the location for existing files? I have done this but unfortunately for many of my torrents I changed the download location when I originally added them to utorrent. For example say I downloaded "album" by "artist". When I originally added this torrent to uTorrent it came up as downloading to /Blah/Blah/artist - year - album/ but I changed it to /Blah/Blah/artist/album/. So the default paths don't match up for any of my torrents, because I did not use the default paths. I believe I either need a tool to convert uTorrents database (resume.dat) to whatever transmission uses. This, or I need some tool to rearrange my files to this default path so I can get transmission to recognize where they are.
It's funny that I know regret organizing all my torrents.

Re: Transfer seeding torrents from uTorrent to Transmission
I don't think the .torrent files actually store the information about where you saved the downloaded files to. That's something that should be in uTorrents config/database. Meaning, if you export the torrents, you can simply import them into Transmission. When you do that, Transmission will first check if you already have the file (in parts or complete). It will detect your local file in your Transmission default download directory. That's all there is to it.
1. put all files in a single directory and make that the default download location in Transmission.
2. export/save .torrent files from uTorrent (they won't contain info about where you saved the files).
3. import those torrents into Transmission and let it do it's magic.
Just give it a try with 1-2 torrents. You'll see it'll work (unless you tapered with the downloaded files in any way, like renames etc.). If you turn off the "Display a window when opening a torrent file" setting, it should all be very much automatic.

Re: Transfer seeding torrents from uTorrent to Transmission
The issue is that all of these torrents aren't referencing the files in the same way. Some of my torrents are imported as a list of mp3's, some are imported as a folder of mp3s, meaning the torrent creator selected his directory when creating the torrent. These differences cause my problem, as the .torrent files store the information of how the original files were organized, whether it be just a list of files or files in multiple folders. I know the .torrent files don't store the information where I stored the files (although I really wish they did!).
Referencing my previous example of "Album" by "Artist", there are a few ways that these torrents are organized by default, that is, it is the default organization of the files im downloading when opening up the torrent in any client.
Some default to a list of .mp3s. If all my torrents were like this, I could just dump all my .mp3s in one folder and do as you said. It would work perfectly.
Some albums with 2 cds default to a torrent containing two folders (CD1, CD2) and the .mp3s are inside the folders. Since the original torrent creator packaged the files this way, when adding the file to a client I do not have a choice but to use this two folder configuration. Sure, I cna put these two folders anywhere I want, but when adding the .torrent to a client I cannot break up the folders. The files would not match up even if clients had this feature, so it wouldn't seed.
My problem with doing what you said is that I have no way to distinguish between types of original organization like this, organization that I did not do. If I dump all my mp3's in one folder then some torrents will work and some will not. The ones that wont are these that were in folders to begin with. And this doesn't happen with just albums with 2 cds, many people create torrents with one folder in them that I cannot change, for example just the album title. These torrents wouldn't work either.
Hopefully you can understand this wall of text. I guess the worst case scenario is to dump all contents of my folders in one folder, see which torrents work, and then manually configure the others. There are just a lot of others unfortunately.

Re: Transfer seeding torrents from uTorrent to Transmission
I think I understand what you mean. You actually re-organized the file structure after the files were downloaded. That of course is a problem. Transmission won't find the files in that case.
Your best bet is to keep using uTorrent to keep seeding those torrents. You could always use Transmission for new torrents and eventually stop seeding the old ones after a while.
