Transmission absolutely not working with remote Hard Drives

Post by Daemon.IE »

Hey all,
I love Transmission!

But...

I have Time Capsule which I use as my internet access point (since it is an excellent router) and as remote storage. It has 2 TB of disk space, I use it for Time Machine backups, and file storage.

In the past one year I have tried using Transmission to download files directly to that remote drive. Computer and Time Capsule are really close one to another, they have line-of-sight between them as well. The problem is that Transmission starts downloading to TC, this goes OK for about 2-3 MB of download, sometimes a bit more, and then it stops. When it stops, it does not know how to resume, it breaks down totally (I cannot even force quit it), and on ocassion I have to power off my computer totally to get the OS back. It explodes basically.

When I restart my computer, what I notice is that Transmission changes download directory of that "failed" torrent to my local drive and then it continues OK. But that is not what I want, I do not want to download locally and then move files to storage disk.

I thought that perhaps Time Capsule is the issue, or the way Mac/OSX (Mavericks at the moment) handles network trafic, or whatever, but then I installed u (micro) Torrent, and tried the same - downloading to remote WiFi accessed drive. And it works perfectly. uTorrent is capable of downloading files to remote drive, and I have even tested restarting the computer just to see if uT can reconnect to network drive and continue partial downloads - and it works. So the issue obviously lies within Transmission.

So ... can I do something to make Transmission work and download to remote drive?

Thanks.

I've given up trying to use network drives for the time being.

I have a NAS unit connected via AFS on a 2GB Ethernet trunk and as soon as I try to do more then three torrents it deadlocks with a beachball. I have to force quit it. It's apparently in whatever the file handling routines are because I tried to "move data files" to a local drive from the NAS unit and it again hung, after only moving 700MB of data. (692 to be exact)

For the moment, I'm now torrenting to a local drive and then copying it manual after to the NAS. Annoying.

Ah, OK, so I am not alone. Perhaps Transmission folks might weigh in their thoughts...

Same here! I have the exact same problem. It's been like over a year since I first mentioned it and nothing has been done.
I don't understand how with nightly builds, this issue has never once been addressed.
I am sure a lot of people would want to download directly to Time Capsule's etc. It just seems logical that it would work the same. But when I try it crashes and hangs and just freaks out completely!

Come on guys! Chime in and help us fix this huge problem!

You can simply forget about that the Transmission devs will do anything about it. This problem has been in Transmission ever since version 1.7. It's completely unusable if it has to store received data over a network connection (e.g. what you call remote hard drives).

There were threads about this issue on this very forum, back in 2009 I think, that were several hundred pages long. Yet, it has never been fixed. I doubt it ever will.
