What are your thoughts on download/upload ratios?
What are your thoughts on download/upload ratios?
Overall, I upload 3X as much as I download (right now, my ratio is about 3.2). I try to maintain that for each individual file, but sometimes I'll leave one seeding for much longer. Occasionally I've stopped seeding a file once it hits 1.0, if it's seeding too slowly. It has to be at least 1.0, though - everybody hates leechers.
I'm relatively new to this, though. Is a ratio of 3.2 good? Bad? Mediocre? Do you have any other opinions on good seeding "etiquette"?

I usually try to aim for a minimum 2.0 ratio, of everything but I'm more of a stickler on the larger files, I figure that not to many people will keep the larger files on the local computer storage. Basically, it's 2.0 ratio if it's a popular file relatively new, especially to kinda account for those leechers/ slash people in capped countries. Tho, if it's a large file and it seems like it's one or two seeders (like only me) I seed upwards of 3.0-5.0. For torrents I made/or a really good film I leave it in and seed for a minute, I had a 33.0 on one 700mb file, and a 27.0 on another. I usually will not remove a torrent until it hit's at least 2.0. I may attempt to perpetually seed important torrents like the rtmpdump-v1.6.tar.gz torrent, or limited released files. In all, it boils down to 2.0 unless otherwise necessary.
Also, a 3.2 ratio is pretty good, especially since the common erroneous but belived ettiquette is to seed 1:1.

if it's still on your computer, don't stop it. don't be a pussy.redshift9 wrote:occasionally i've stopped seeding a file once it hits 1.0, if it's seeding too slowly.

Got it - no more of that 1:1 nonsense. I'll also take a look at Transmission's settings and uncheck the box next to "be a pussy".
Thanks. These are the tips I've been looking for.

holy sh*t the pussy has teeth!
*puts on cock armor* i meant every word of my last post. you want to seed up until the point where you find it morally permissible to stop, because you are afraid of getting caught with your hands in the cookie jar.

Oh, I know you meant it - and it was funny as hell. Seriously, thanks. I'll follow all the advice I've gotten so far.

I usually just let it run as long as I have space on my harddrive, if not I'll remove them at around 2-3:1 depending on how healthy the swarm is. I did seed Ubuntu 9.10 to a bit over 150:1 though.
Re: What are your thoughts on download/upload ratios?
My bandwidth is pretty small so I try to keep a ratio of 1-1,5.
Re: What are your thoughts on download/upload ratios?
I always try to keep a higher upload than download - my default is stop seeding at 1.1% but I often "seed forever" if I see a lot of unfinished leechers. This is partially my altruism but largely out of self preservation. I remember being booted off a site once because I had just joined them and went crazy grabbing everything in sight - then I had an unfixable negative ratio - even with the best of intentions they was no way I was able to fix it - they kicked me out and I learned my lesson.

I think it's best to aim for 3.0:1 ratio or better, and the best way to do this is uncheck "Stop seeding at ratio:" and just seed everything forever or until you run out of hard-drive space. Then you can clean up whatever you don't use anymore. I personally try to keep the ones that are seeding well because that means I'm probably needed
