I was having a problem whereby Transmission would NEVER seed once a download was completed. After much gnashing of teeth and tearing of hair I've determined that what's actually happening is that files that are downloading are uploading just fine, denying any bandwidth whatsoever to completed files that want to seed.
However I now have no downloads, and three files wanting to seed. Two are doing so, which is a major improvement! However, they don't seem to be connecting to many peers despite there being hundreds available in some cases, and I wondered if someone could explain how seeding actually works as I just don't understand and I'd like to.
In the Inspector, this is what I see:
Torrent 1:
Trackers panel: Seeders 162, Leechers 161
Peers panel: 2 connected: 2 tracker, UL to 2, 260 known
Main window: Seeding to 2 of 2 peers - UL: 36.5KB/s
Torrent 2:
Trackers panel: Seeders 45, Leechers 52
Peers panel: 5 connected: 1 tracker, 2 incoming, 3 cache, 258 known
Main window: Seeding to 0 of 5 peers - UL: 0.0KB/s
Torrent 3:
Trackers panel: Seeders 51, Leechers 96
Peers panel: 31 connected: 9 tracker, 22 incoming, UL to 1, 258 known
Main window: Seeding to 1 of 31 peers - UL: 27.5KB/s
SO this is going much better than when there's downloads active. My questions are:
1) Why do downloads steal ALL the bandwidth at the expense of seeding files?
2) What dictates how many seeds I connect and upload to when I can actually get seeding working properly? (ie, when downloads complete)
3) Are there any settings I can change to improve this?
Oh, here are my answers to pertinent questions!
I've tried using the standard 1.76, the latest nightly build (2nd January) and the latest beta 1.80b3.
Currently using Transmission 1.76 9852 on OSX 10.6.2.
- Do you have any per-torrent or global speed limits set?
Global upload is set to 64KB which is about 80% of my upload speed. Per-torrent is as per global.
- What are your global and per-torrent peer limits?
Global max connections: 225
Maximum connections for new transfers: 130
- In the `Tracker' tab's list of trackers, how many Tiers are there, and how many trackers are listed for each tier?
Only one tier in every torrent file I have, and only one tracker listed in those.
- Is your incoming peer port open or closed?
It's set to manual choice of port (over 50000) and UPnP is on, and the green light is on.
EDIT: Less than an hour later all 3 seeds are sitting there inactive, no uploading. The peers I can connect to say "You unchoked the peer but the peer is not interested." What is going on?
