How to save ratio?

Post by Lockmaster »

Hi all, I'm a newbie when it comes to Mac, Transmission & Torrents. I started out with Trans 1.76 and it was only okay 'till I opened a port in my router and optimized the settings in Transmission. Then I was getting dl speeds averaging 500 kbs. This lasted a few weeks and my system (particularly my browser speed) slowed to a crawl. Pausing all or clicking on Speed Limit would do the trick while browsing for a few weeks but then it bogged down even when paused. When not browsing the net, 1.76 would stall for long periods of time with no other computer activity and these were on torrents that were well seeded and plenty of leech. I thought the latest version of Transmission would be the answer and so deleted 1.76 and upgraded to 1.80b. I also upped My OS to Snow Leapard. The exact same problem occured with the new version an so I downgraded back to 1.76. Problem still there. Finally, I rebooted my router and modem and started getting good performance on dls, uploads and browsing! Should have checked that first!

I try to keep my global ratio between 1.0 & 2.0 but with the version changing I lost all history of past activity in Transmission and it put me back to 0.00. After two weeks my ratio is finally back up to 1.18 but my system is slower than ever, once again. Rebooting my hardware is not showing any results and even with Trans not running, browsing the net is way too slow. Yes I have used MacScan & MacTuneup but it does no good. It may have something to do with upgrading to Snow instead of a clean install. From what I've read, upgrades create more problems than good. So now I'm at the crossroads of wiping my whole system and doing a clean install + reinstalling all my software. The only thing stopping me from doing this is all the time involved and loosing my Transmission history.

My Question then, is there anyway to save the info and reinstall it after the new Transmission installation? Perhaps I only need to backup the info.plist file? I just noticed that Tranmission is not installed to my Applications folder but only resides in my download folder! Also I imagine if I upgrade Trans to a new version without wiping out the former version it should retain all logged info. Is this correct?
Thank you all for any help

Thank you X190 for your fast reply!
It was the crasiest thing and a little embarrassing.....
The next day I went into my office (where I keep my PC's). My Mac has a home in my Den. That's where I'm happiest and try to stay out of my office as much as possible, sometimes for more than a week. Anyhow somewhere during the process I outlined previously, I also downloaded and installed Utorrent on one of my PC's to see if there would be any difference in speed. There wasn't and I soon abandoned that avenue. As you might have guessed by now I was shocked to find that I not only left my PC running but also Utorrent was still seeding the world some file I never wanted in the first place and using up all my bandwidth! So there you have it. My confession! Utorrent is now gone and I am back to full health in Trans 1.76.

Please accept my apology for not answering you right off. I was busy with some family emergencies and work. Just wanted to thank you and maybe others will see this and learn from my mistake (or just get a good laugh). I will file this info you provided for the eventual day when I do have to start over or update Transmission.

P.S. What the Confused Philosopher says is so true!
