I'll recommend to switch back to 2.73 on MAC OS 10.6.8. I experienced many problems with 2.75 on MAC but never a complete
freeze of the machine. But the 2.73 is definitively much more stable and predictive on 10.6.8.

Don't know if it helps but on my side I got similar (altough not identical) behaviour with 2.75 on MAC 10.6.8.
All problems disapearead after I went back to 2.73.

Just my two cents

Some updates:
- After switching back to 2.73, all downloads seem working fine
- All other errors (file becoming corrupted, network problems) are gone.

On my side, 2.73 is preferable to 2.75 on MAC OS 10.6.8

After I tried all possible options (not sure I can be exhaustive on this), I decided to go back to V2.73 and it seems to work better than 2.75:
- No more corrupted files (up to now!)
- No more freezes.

It seems that 2.73 is much more stable than 2.75 on OS X 10.6.8.
